George and Cindy Anthony Dr. Phil interview (full videos on YouTube)

New: Follow the Casey Anthony Case on Facebook and on Twitter

George and Cindy Anthony granted an exclusive interview with Dr. Phil on September 13, 2011.  The most stunning aspect of the interview was that George and Cindy were at complete odds with one another.  George Anthony had no support for his daughter, Casey, while Cindy seemed to believe Casey’s stories hook, line and sinker.  Casey Anthony was charged with first degree murder, aggravated first degree manslaughter and aggravated child abuse stemming from the June 2008 death and disappearance of her two-year-old daughter Caylee.  In addition to the three charges, Anthony faced another four counts of lying to law enforcement officers for failing to help with an initial investigation into her daughter’s whereabouts.  That investigation began on July 15, 2008.

During Casey Anthony’s murder trial, her defense attorney, Jose Baez, stated that Casey was sexually abused by her father and that the two were home when they discovered Caylee’s body dead in the family swimming pool.  The date, given by Attorney Jose Baez, was June 16, 2008.  During Cindy Anthony’s interview with Dr. Phil, she stated that she believed her daughter’s story about Caylee drowning in the swimming pool.  She did say, however, that she did not believe that George Anthony ever sexually abused their daughter.

George Anthony revealed a different story as he stated he believed Casey may have been drugging Caylee so she could go party and may have accidentally overdosed her.  One of the most shocking statements made during the interview was that she believed her granddaughter, Caylee Anthony, received justice when Casey walked out of court a free woman.

Caribbean Music: Its Past and Future

When one thinks of Caribbean music many things come to mind as the islands in this archipelago that stretches across the Atlantic Ocean and encompasses the Caribbean Sea is as diverse as it is beautiful.  With sounds and flavors stemming from cultural influences such as African, Indian, Latin American and European; Caribbean music is known for its rich, cultural sounds.  There isn’t one language spoken throughout the Caribbean either, as English, Dutch, French and Spanish are the predominant dialects.  This too is reflected in Caribbean music as various inflections and accents are present in vocal performances. African and Latin American drum beats are present in many forms of Caribbean music.

Caribbean islands are those that are located in the Caribbean Sea and extend from the southern parts of the United States to the northern tip of South America.  As the region is home to thousands of islands, the Caribbean is generally divided into two areas: the Bahamas and the Antilles which is comprised of the Greater and Lesser Antilles.  The sheer amount of island land mass in the region and their tropical climates lend to the Caribbean’s popularity as a honeymoon spot and tourist destination.  As each island has its own history and cultural influences, music varies from one island area to the next.  Countries, territories and islands that contribute to the Caribbean are as follows.

List of Caribbean Islands

African slaves played an important role in the development of Caribbean music styles.   Musical influences and styles that are traced back to African slaves are known as Afro-Caribbean.  Here is a list of regions where Afro Caribbean music is predominant.

Before European exploration and slavery brought the French, Dutch, Spanish and African slaves to the islands of the Caribbean, the lands were filled with indigenous Indians.  Known as “Amerindians” the indigenous people had their own music styles which to a slight degree, is still heard throughout the Caribbean.   Drums, maracas, chanting and gourds were often used in ritualistic dancing throughout the area.  Many of the indigenous people were killed or enslaved and much of their music perished with them; however some of it still survives.  Much of the surviving indigenous people remaining in the Caribbean are the Arawak or Taino.  They are present throughout Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Aruba, Jamaica and the Bahamas. Many of the modern day people living in Puerto Rico, apart from those known to be Arawak or Taino, show strong lineage as verified through DNA testing.   Listening to the rhythms of the Arawak or Taino people instantly brings to mind modern day sounds of the Caribbean and it is easy to see how the indigenous people contributed to the sounds classified as Caribbean music today.  Essentially, modern day Caribbean music is a blend of Amerindian, African, European and Hispanic.  These culturally contributions extend far beyond Caribbean music and reach into dance, customs, festivals, restaurants and more.

Those visiting the Caribbean clearly see and hear the importance of music to these lands.  From the rhythmic beats of times past to the modern day variations of styles that have merged with Americanized music genres such as jazz, blues and country,  the Caribbean is drenched in music.  Music isn’t reserved solely for special events but makes up the backdrop of Caribbean life and culture.   It isn’t uncommon to see musicians break out in fervent songs, and rhythmic beats whenever the moment presents itself.  Not only is the Caribbean rich with a history that is steeped in music, but new musical styles are continually birthed from the lands.  With rich diversity and a plethora of genres to choose from, music lovers of all tastes are sure to find a Caribbean music style that will satisfy their preferences.

Should Christians participate in Halloween? A Christian perspective

It’s an age old question- well, maybe not that old; but at least as old as medieval days, when Christians began debating whether or not they should participate in Halloween.  The question surrounding Halloween is one that is very perplexing to many Christians and the more one traces the roots of Halloween, especially when it’s realized that the holiday has its roots in Samhain, many Christians feel as if the worst thing they could do would be to participate in this feast of the dead and devils.

To some Christians, you may as well be asking them to sacrifice their children to satan himself be merely suggesting they don scary costumes and ask neighbors for candy.  Other Christians feel the pressure from other believers not to participate in the celebration.  Many churches try to compensate for the holiday by having their own celebrations.  The best of these, undoubtedly, is the Halloween/Hallelujah night.

One of the most interesting fact surrounding Halloween and Christianity is that the Catholic Church pretty much addressed this issue when it went and took all the secular holidays and turned them into religious holy days.  Take your pick, fellow brother and sister- Easter, Christmas and Halloween were all mixed with Christianity and paganism in order to appease the Catholic Church.  On Halloween, the Catholic Church, as some Anglican churches are celebrating “All Saint’s Day” which begins on November 1st.  Christians that decide not to participate in Halloween due to its occultic origins may want to take a look at all the things that life presents us that has its roots in either the occult or things not pertaining to Christianity.

Take a look at the names of the days of the week or the months of the year?  January was named for the Roman god “Janus,” should all Christians rise up and protest the naming of the months due to their mythological origins?  Does Jesus hold Christians to a strict standard of legalistic dos and don’ts or does He look upon the heart?

Does Jesus object to Christians trick or treating if they do it in fun, or is having any part of an “occultic” celebration equate the believer with a sinful lifestyle?

There are many Christians who use Halloween as an opportunity for evangelizing and witnessing; but it must be asked if the house down the street with the tracts instead of candy are really presenting the gospel in a palatable way to the unsaved.  Please folks, if you’re going to hand out a tract, please put some candy with it, or else you run the risk of scaring all the children in the neighborhood away from Jesus for good.

There’s no doubt that Halloween has its roots in the occult, and there’s no question that many who practice black arts will cast spells and practice divination on this day.  But that doesn’t mean that Christians can’t present the gospel of Jesus Christ in a fun, entertaining and loving manner that doesn’t terrify children or leaving them begging for fun.

If you’re going to host a Hallelujah night or a Halloween alternative, please do your best to make certain it is better than what is going on outside.  If Christians drop the ball when it comes to kids, there’s a good chance they will lose them for the Lord forever.

And if that happens- guess who wins.

I really love ASCII art. Here is a picture of Jesus originally painted by Carl Bloch. The picture is in text..this isn’t a graphic image.

I could wish you joy and peace to last a whole life long,
   I could wish you sunshine or a cheerful little song;
Or wish you all the happiness that this life could bring,
But I wish you Jesus, but I wish you Jesus,
But I wish you Jesus, more than anything.

I could wish you leaves of gold and may your path be smooth,
   I could wish you treasures or that all your dreams come true;
And I could wish you paradise that every day be Spring,
But I wish you Jesus, but I wish you Jesus,
'Cause when I wish you Jesus, I've wished you everything.
'Cause when I wish you Jesus, I've wished you everything.

Occupy Wall Street Update: Protests split Christian community right and left

October 15, 2011 New York

As the Occupy Wall Street protests continue and have now spread to Europe, U.S. shores are experiencing a different aspect of the movement: a division in the Christian community.  Charisma magazine   pointed out that the movement has split the religious community down the right and the left.  For those who may feel a bit out of the loop; here’s a quick breakdown.  Unlike what many might think, Christians do not all think the same, vote the same or interpret Christianity and the Scriptures in the same manner.  There are some Christians that are more conservative and staunch Republicans, while others call themselves Christians and are 100% pure Democrats.  There are Christians who identify as gay and lesbian and there’s a growing movement of Christian liberals.

So how do the majority of Christians view the Occupy Wall Street movement?  There is no definitive answer.  There are many Christians that believe in the prosperity gospel and believe that if someone is rich, it’s because they had enough faith in God to “claim” those blessings.  On the other hand, there are many Christians that equate poverty and suffering with being closer to God- most often quoting the Beatitudes.  Some Christians feel that big government is actually more in line with the teachings of Jesus- that a true Christian would never turn their back on the poor, the hungry, the widow, the orphan and the needy; while some argue that there will be poor always and there isn’t enough one person can do to meet the needs of those who are most destitute.

Some Christians agree with the movement while others criticize it.  Reminiscent of the 70s Hippie movement; it seems that the Christian right is against Occupy Wall Street while the Christian left is praising the move.

Occupy Wall Street Update: Protesters storm Citibank (video)

October 15, 2011-New York, New York

According to reports by the New York Police Department, protesters with the Occupy Wall Street movement stormed a Citibank in New York causing a disruption.  A spokesperson for Citibank released a public statement, saying that as a result of the protesters, they resorted to calling 911.

The public statement is as follows, “”A large amount of protesters entered our branch at 555 La Guardia Place around 2:00 PM today. They were very disruptive and refused to leave after being repeatedly asked, causing our staff to call 911. The Police asked the branch staff to close the branch until the protesters could be removed. Only one person asked to close an account and was accommodated.”

More than 70 people have been arrested throughout the day; approximately 24 protesters were arrested due to the Citibank incident.

Huffington Post reporter Tyler Kingkade  captured amazing video, in crystal clear clarity of the protests.  You may see Kingkade’s video report in the player below.

Spreading the Gospel on Facebook and the Casey Anthony case

I love Facebook.  The truth is I didn’t realize it’s full potential for sharing the Gospel until after the Casey Anthony case.  You see, I began blogging about Casey Anthony back in 2008.  Since that time, our former team members at Prime Writer News Network wrote extensively about the case.  Since then, I dedicated much of two of my Examiner columns: Tampa Crime and U.S. Headlines to the Casey Anthony case and trial.  After which, I started a Facebook group in order to keep in touch with others about the trial.  Facebook: Casey Anthony Latest News The group grew substantially and amazingly fast.  Now that Casey Anthony is a free woman, not too many people are interested in her story.  In fact, many are just left bewildered wondering what exactly happened.  One thing I learned through the trial (and not that a Florida jury can deliver a mind numbing decision) but rather the power of Facebook.  In fact, after Casey Anthony was acquitted on July 5, 2011, millions of people vented their anger, frustration and outrage on Facebook.

Facebook is a powerful force!

Did you know that the most popular and most visited Facebook page doesn’t belong to President Obama, Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber?  You might be surprised to discover that the number one Facebook page is about Jesus Christ!  It’s Jesus Daily and it’s an incredibly awesome witnessing tool that shares the love of God.   At last count, Jesus Daily had over 9,000,000 fans! Yes, that’s right folks- more than nine million fans and growing!

How beautiful that the most popular site on Facebook is one that shares God’s love and the good news of Jesus Christ!

Don’t be ashamed to share your faith on Facebook, or even start your own group or page where you boldly profess your faith.  Top sites like Google and Facebook are always developing new technologies that help share information, websites, YouTube videos, pages and content.  Create a Facebook page and share your faith.  You never know who will come by and may just see a video, photo or read a verse or Scripture that has a profound impact on their life.
