Haiti earthquake update aftershocks strike while rescue and relief efforts continue (photos, videos)
It’s been eight days since a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the nation of Haiti and this morning a 5.9-6.1 earthquake terrified survivors and threatened rescue and relief efforts. Meanwhile, there are still miraculous recoveries underway. Yesterday, a 70-year-old woman was pulled from the rubble and today, a five-year-old boy was miraculously pulled from underneath a collapsed home. The current casualty count is at 72,000 and Haitian officials expect that figure to rise.

Though the aftershock caused chaos and instilled fear and panic in many, it did not hinder relief and rescue efforts. Additional U.S. troops are on route to Haiti and rescuers continue to search for the best ways to deliver aid to desperate people. It is unclear whether the current aftershock resulted in additional casualties.
After eight days, aid continues to pile up at the Port-au-Prince airport and there remains great difficulty distributing that aid where it is needed. The Red Cross has raised an estimated $24 million dollars with approximately 1/5 of those funds being raised through the text campaign.
Fundraising continues as people want to contribute to the Haiti crisis. A new report states that the Obama’s have just donated $15,000 to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.
