President Obama in Tampa, high speed rail (video, photos,)
President Obama spoke to approximately 3,000 people in Tampa, Florida regarding the economy and a new high speed rail transit that will be funded through a grant from the Recovery Plan. Upon landing at MacDill Air Force base, President Obama and Joe Biden were met by Governor Charlie Crist, Mayor Pam Iorio, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Senator Bill Nelson, and Florida CFO Alex Sink. The town hall followed his first State of the Union Address.

After arriving in Tampa, President Obama toured a maintenance hangar and met crew members whose job it is to service aircraft used to refuel planes that are mid air. The KC-135 Stratotanker planes have been instrumental in Haiti relief efforts.
President Obama arrived late for the town hall meeting which was scheduled to begin at 12:45 p.m. ET. He entered the Bob Martinez Sports Center at the University of Tampa at 1:24; Vice President Joe Biden introduced him. The President began by making special note of several attendees: Firefighters Lt. Roger Picard and Lt. Brian Smithey who recently returned from Haiti. They are members of the Tampa Fire Rescue department’s canine search and rescue team. President Obama also made special mention of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ coach Tony Dungy.
President Obama announced that Tampa will receive a 1.25 billion dollar grant to create the new high speed rail. The new high speed rail transit is expected to be completed in five years and should being approximately 20,000 jobs to the Tampa Bay area. |
