Heroes of the Haiti earthquake disaster (photos, videos)

It’s been more than two weeks since a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake ripped through the nation of Haiti. More than 150,000 are estimated dead and the true death toll may never be known. Through the rubble and fallen buildings of Haiti, stories of heroism have emerged.

Many of the heroes of the Haiti earthquake disaster are not exceptional in appearance, they weren’t trained by elite government or military forces, but rather they are citizens of Haiti, who responded to the need at hand.

These heroes searched through fallen buildings, listening for signs of life, and then when it was determined that there was a survivor, they worked diligently, using what little resources were available to them, until they freed the victim and brought him or her to safety. Before the professional search and rescue teams arrived in Haiti, these citizens were rescuing their family, friends, loved ones, and strangers.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper featured these Haitian heroes as well as the heroic first responders who acted heroically, in Haiti and in other disasters on his broadcast in the feature, CNN Heroes. Though many of the heroes of the Haiti earthquake disaster will remain nameless, we recognize them for their tireless efforts rescuing those who were trapped under the rubble.
