The Chile earthquake death toll has reached 723 as the search for survivors continues. Reports from Concepcion, Chile state that more than 1.5 million people remain without power surrounding Santiago as drinking water has become unsafe and electricity and gas is limited. Chile was rocked by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake, one of the greatest earthquakes of all time. The aftershocks may continue for months.

Cranes and other heavy equipment are being used to move earth, rubble, and broken buildings as recovery and rescue efforts are underway.

Though the strength of Chile’s earthquake was more powerful than the quake that devastated the nation of Haiti, the loss of life has been considerably less. Haiti’s death toll is at 212,000 where the current death toll in Chile is 723. That doesn’t negate the impact or severity of damage that Chile is facing however.

It has been difficult for rescue teams to get into Chile as the damage around Concepcion has been great. Bridges have collapsed, airports are closed, and roads have been destroyed. For those bringing aid to survivors in Chile, getting into the country has proved to be difficult.
