Born on August 23, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas, Rodney’s family moved to Los Angeles where in 1956, his father left the family. In 1961, when Alcala was 18-years-old, he joined the United States Army. He was discharged in 1964 after being diagnosed with anti social personality disorder.

Reports state that Alcala then went to UCLA and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He was said to have a near genius IQ and once studied under Roman Polanski. He had a passion for photography and would frequently photograph women and children. Now, authorities fear that some of the photos found in the locker rented by the convicted serial killer are images of more victims.
