Fort Hood Shooter Nidal Malik Hasan Charged

Nidal Malik Hasan

The Fort Hood shooter, Nidal Malik Hasan was officially charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder today. Nidal Malik Hasan is charged with murdering Juanita Warman, Libardo Caraveo, John P. Gaffaney, Russel Seager, Justin Decrow, Amy Krueger, Jason Hunt, Frederick Greene, Aaron Nemelka, Michael Pearson, Kham Xiong, Francheska Velez, and Michael G. Cahill. The charges were filed through the military’s legal system or as a court martial. It is also possible that more charges will come in the future.

In addition to the news that Nidal Malik Hasan was charged, former co-workers and colleagues of Hasan’s are coming forward stating that they had their doubts regarding Hasan’s competency as a psychiatrist. Several of Hasan’s colleagues remained anonymous and spoke with CNN stating that they had concerns that Nidal Malik Hasan was not up to par as a psychiatrist. One of the sources went so far as to state that no one in their class would have referred patients to him.

According to Colonel Kimberly Kesling who serves as Deputy Commander of Clinical Services at Darnall Army Medical Center, Nidal Hasan’s evaluation reports showed that he had difficulty adjusting to his residency. She stated that they worked with him to get him integrated into their practice and after a while he did adapt well and did a good job.

Meanwhile, those colleagues who spoke with CNN stated that his Power Point Presentations were far off base and described them as unscientific and inappropriate. In fact, they stated that when Nidal Hasan was required to lecture or speak about health he would turn the conversation to focus on Muslims and the hardships they faced. Some of those conversations would include the topic of suicide bombing and Hasan would give reasons that would justify the bombings.

Former colleagues reportedly told CNN that they had even reported the inappropriate behavior to Nidal Malik Hasan’s superiors.

The prosecutor in this case could have selected to have Nidal Hasan tried in civilian court or in Federal court but instead selected a court marital. It is believed that the choice for court martial was selected due to the premise that Nidal Hasan acted alone and not as part of a terrorist organization when he executed his deadly rampage. It should also be mentioned that Francheska Velez was pregnant at the time of her murder; therefore it is possible that a 14th murder charge may be filed.
