Anthony Sowell funerals held for two victims
Michelle Mason’s funeral was held at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church. She was reported missing in October of 2008. The horrific murders have stunned a nation and left a community running on empty. The search for additional victims continues as authorities have moved their investigation to an abandoned house next door to the home of Anthony Sowell.
Nancy Cobbs was a grandmother of five children and a mother of three: Audrey Williams, Kyana Hunt, and William L. Hunt III. The three leaned on each other for emotional support during the service that was filled with grief and mourning.
Michelle Mason’s mother, Adlean Atterberry was comforted by those who came to show their sorrow and support. Previously, Adlean Atterberry was reported as saying that she believed Anthony Sowell had removed fliers that she had placed in the neighborhood when Michelle went missing. Michelle Mason was cremated as reports said that her body had been too decomposed for a burial.
At the end of Michelle Mason’s funeral service, mourners released balloons into the wind in memory of Michelle. There have been ten victims identified in the Anthony Sowell murder case. They are as follows:
Tonia Carmichael, 52 Nancy Cobbs, 45 Tishana Culver, 31 Crystal Dozier, 38 Telacia Fortson, 31 Amelda Hunter, 47 Michelle Mason, 45 Kim Yvette Smith, 44 Janice Webb, 49

Police used thermal imaging technology to check for any additional evidence on both Anthony Sowell’s home and the property located inside the abandoned home at 12205 Imperial. Thermal imaging detects any matter that is decomposing by displaying certain colors. The technology uses infrared radiation and will detect heat loss or show where there is a change in heat. On Saturday, November 14, 2009, police wrapped up their investigation at approximately 8:00 p.m. and were seen carrying several bags of evidence from Anthony Sowell’s home. No official word has yet been released regarding the type of evidence that was collected.
Authorities are expected to return on Monday to search for more evidence as well. The house has been taped off and authorities have gathered blue prints, hoping that they will reveal additional areas where Anthony Sowell might have buried more victims. Some community residents would rather see authorities simply tear the house down. There have been a total of 11 victims discovered at Anthony Sowell’s residence; ten of which have been identified. The search for additional victims has not been limited solely to Anthony Sowell’s immediate area on Imperial Ave, but has now stretched worldwide.
The FBI has confirmed that they are investigating missing person’s cases in South Carolina, North Carolina, Japan, and California to see if there is any connection to Sowell. At fifty years old, Anthony Sowell is a convicted sex offender and has plead not guilty to charges of kidnapping, attempted murder, felonious assault, and rape. He is facing five additional charges of aggravated murder and more charges are likely to follow. Anthony Sowell pleads not guilty
Anthony Sowell stood before Judge John P. O’Donell and found that his bail had been increased by one million dollars. Sowell’s bail is now set at 6 million dollars. Anthony Sowell remains in the Cuyahoga County Jail and is facing additional charges of aggravated murder related to the October 29, 2009 discovery of two bodies in his home. The discovery launched a full scale investigation that resulted in the recovery of 11 bodies; the search has expanded to an abandoned house also on Imperial Ave.
Assistant Cuyahoga County prosecutor Gayle Williams said that the rape victim who told police of the attack was only breaths away from becoming one of Anthony Sowell’s murder victims. The search for additional victims and connections between Sowell and other missing person cases has expanded to Japan, North and South Carolina, and California: areas where Sowell was stationed as a marine.
Anthony Sowell was a registered sex offender and had been previously convicted for raping a 21 year old woman. Though the prosecutor’s office stated that Sowell had repeatedly raped the woman, he pled guilty to two counts of attempted rape.
According to police reports, Anthony Sowell attacked the woman (who is being identified only as Jane Doe) on September 22, 2009 after luring her to his house. At the home on Imperial Avenue, he raped her and strangled her until she became unconscious. Reports state that Sowell used a cord to strangle the woman. The woman managed to escape after regaining consciousness.
Additional charges are expected to be filed against Sowell. If convicted of murder charges, Anthony Sowell could face the death penalty.

Anthony Sowell tenth victim identified as Leshonda Long
|
Anthony Sowell tenth victim identified
The tenth victim of Anthony Sowell has been identified. The woman has been revealed as Leshonda Long. Leshonda Long was 25 years old and has not been seen since August 2008. It was Leshonda’s skull that was retrieved from a bucket in the basement of Anthony Sowell’s house of horrors. Like the other victims, Leshonda Long had a past struggle with crack cocaine use. Authorities believe that Sowell preyed upon women who had drug addictions as it made them more vulnerable to his brutal attacks. The great length of time since Anthony Sowell’s release from prison for attempted rape and the amount of missing women that have disappeared in the Cleveland, Ohio area, particularly near Sowell’s residence, has caused many to feel that authorities did not pay as close attention to the crimes due to the fact that the victims were African-America women who struggled with drug addiction.
Reports had surfaced that Anthony Sowell had been involved in altercations with women, including neighbors seeing a naked woman fall from an upper story window, and that a hideous stench of death permeated the street where Anthony Sowell’s home stood. Despite the police and health officials being notified of incidents and the stench, nothing was done until October 29, 2009 when police decided to enter Sowell’s home, though he wasn’t home, and discovered two deceased bodies. They would later find a total of 11 victims and the investigation continues.
There have now been 10 victims identified. They are as follows: Tonia Carmichael, 52 Nancy Cobbs, 45 Tishana Culver, 31 Crystal Dozier, 38 Telacia Fortson, 31 Amelda Hunter, 47 Michelle Mason, 45 Kim Yvette Smith, 44 Janice Webb, 49
Leshonda Long, at 25 years old, is the youngest of Anthony Sowell’s victims to be discovered. Anthony Sowell is facing five counts of aggravated murder and is expected to face additional charges. He is currently in jail on 5,000,000 bond.

Anthony Sowell Nine Victims Identified

Anthony Sowell Nine Victims Identified
![]() Serial Killer Anthony Sowell appears in court Anthony Sowell has shocked and horrified Cleveland, Ohio and the nation with his crimes. Though he is to be innocent until proven guilty there is no doubt that he will go down in history as one of the worst serial killers in our generation. Yesterday, two of Anthony Sowell’s 11 victims were identified bringing the total to 9. Here are the names of the 9 victims that have been identified.
1. Tonia Carmichael 2. Telacia Fortson 3. Tishana Culver 4. Nancy Cobbs 5. Amelda Hunter 6. Chrystal Dozier 7. Michele Mason 8. Janice Webb 9. Kim Yvette Smith
Many of Anthony Sowell’s victims came from backgrounds that included drug addiction and disappearing for days, even weeks at a time. That doesn’t make their families’ grief or the impact of Anthony Sowell’s crimes any less weighty. Forensic psychiatrists speculate that it was because of the women’s backgrounds that Anthony Sowell chose them as victims. It might even explain how some of the women would enter the home of Sowell, seemingly oblivious to the stench and ignore any signals that Sowell might have been sending that he was a dangerous individual.
Meanwhile, the community wants to know how police missed multiple chances to catch Sowell. There are new allegations that just several weeks ago, Anthony Sowell was standing over a woman in the bushes surrounding his home, while both he and the woman were naked. A neighbor reportedly saw the scene and noticed that the woman was bloodied and bruised and called authorities. According to reports, police never contacted the neighbor nor interviewed him.
Another of Anthony Sowell’s escaped victims sheds light on how Anthony Sowell may have been able to get away with his crimes for so long. Tanja Doss states that Anthony Sowell had attacked her, however because of her past drug use; she was reluctant to contact police and report the crime. Other survivors of Anthony Sowell report similar tales. If the victims were using drugs with Anthony Sowell, they would be less likely to report him to authorities.
On Monday, Anthony Sowell was indicted for the September 22, 2009 attack where the victim was raped by Sowell than reported it to police. Anthony Sowell has been indicted on one count of attempted murder, two counts of kidnapping and felonious assault, and two counts of rape. Anthony Sowell case expands worldwide
The Anthony Sowell case expands worldwide as investigators compare Anthony Sowell’s MO (Modus Operandi) to other areas where the alleged serial killer lived. Anthony Sowell was born on August 19, 195 and grew up in East Cleveland. On January 24, 1978 he enlisted in the Marine Corp and served eight years until his discharge on January 18, 1985. The question as to whether or not Anthony Sowell began his sexual deviant exploits and brutal attacks of violence before his arrest and sentencing in 1990 must be addressed. Anthony Sowell’s first known victims and attacks occurred in 1989. Since the revelation of Anthony Sowell’s house of horrors and his victims, women have been coming forward stating that they were also victims of Anthony Sowell.
In addition to other Cleveland, Ohio unsolved rape and murder cases, investigators are looking for connections between Anthony Sowell and unsolved crimes in Japan, California and North Carolina. Yesterday, the Plain Dealer reported that police in North Carolina are reviewing their cold cases for a possible connection between Sowell and victims in their state. Anthony Sowell spent more than four years stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
Yesterday, two more victims were identified, bringing the number of identified victims to 9. Anthony Sowell was also indicted on Monday for charges of felonious assault, attempted murder, kidnapping to engage in a sex act and rape. The indictment was for the prior rape assault and is in addition to the five counts of rape and aggravated murder charges that Sowell is also facing. It is expected that more charges will follow as the investigation unfolds.
The list of Anthony Sowell’s victims is as follows: 1. Tonia Carmichael 2. Telacia Fortson 3. Tishana Culver 4. Nancy Cobbs 5. Amelda Hunter 6. Chrystal Dozier 7. Michele Mason 8. Janice Webb 9. Kim Yvette Smith

Anthony Sowell victims remembered in candlelight prayer vigil, critics respond (video)
|
![]() Serial Killer Anthony Sowell appears in court Anthony Sowell victims were remembered in a candlelight prayer vigil last night in Cleveland, Ohio. Community residents gathered together in the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church to offer support to the victims’ families as well as to band together and ensure that something good can come out of this horrific tragedy. Approximately 500 people were assembled singing, praying and worshiping before embarking on a candlelit journey to Anthony Sowell’s house of horrors. The grief is still overwhelming for many in the community as victims continue to be identified.
In addition to last night’s candlelight prayer vigil, a rally was scheduled for tonight by the Black on Black Crime Survivors and Survivors Victims of Tragedy. The groups planned to tie yellow ribbons around poles in memory of the victims. For more information on groups or events sponsored by the organizations, please visit their websites.
The response to the memorials and rallies haven’t all been favorable, however. Many are still dealing with the outrage of feeling that their communities let them down and neglected to investigate the ‘Anthony Sowell House of Horrors’ from the first signs that something was wrong. Some believe that the community support and rallies come too late, that the community suffers from greater evils, such as drug addiction, that aren’t being adequately treated and that authorities let the community down.
For grieving families, however, many are too emotionally wiped out to remark upon the organizations and support. Many are dealing with the new revelations that their children, despite their past substance abuse or issues with the law, are never coming home. They were led like lambs to Anthony Sowell’s slaughter, and nothing is going to bring them back.
For Inez Fortson, mother of Telacia Fortson, the grief is so great that she has become numb. As reported to WOIO, Inez Fortson stated, “Whenever I see him on TV or think about him, I have to pray. I believe that one day, I’ll have to forgive him for what he’s done. But right now, I can’t, because I’m numb.”
Earlier today, a Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted Anthony Sowell on charges of rape, felonious assault, attempted murder and kidnapping to engage in a sex act. Today’s indictment is in addition to the five counts of rape and aggravated murder that he is facing. Slideshow: Anthony Sowell House of HorrorsAnthony Sowell case expands worldwide
