Casey Anthony declared indigent, Florida taxpayers pay for her defense
![]() Casey Anthony Judge Stan Strickland issued his ruling and declared Casey Anthony indigent, the decision comes on the accused murderer’s 24th birthday. Yesterday, Casey Anthony appeared in court where a number of issues were addressed: how much money she has received, how her defense attorneys have spent $275,000, and the public release of nearly 50 inmate letters that were illegally communicated in jail. Judge Stan Strickland reviewed how Casey’s team of defense attorneys have spent $250,000 in court costs and determined Florida taxpayers will cover Casey’s attorney fees.

Judge Stan Strickland also determined that the defense has spent the money earned thus far in an appropriate manner. According to the motion that was granted, the Court reviewed all items regarding the cost ledger and was satisfied that the Defendant (Casey Anthony) has met all of the statutory standards.
The approval doesn’t mean that Casey Anthony’s defense is at liberty to spend the taxpayer’s money in any manner they want. They will be required to submit their costs to the court and their fees and rates will be subject to approval.

![]() Casey Anthony According to new evidence released today in the Casey Anthony case, ABC paid Casey Anthony $200,000 for photos of Caylee Anthony. The news was released during a court appearance where Casey Anthony requested a ruling by Judge Stan Strickland regarding her status as indigent. Casey’s defense attorneys said that ABC had paid the large sum to Casey, but the funds have been used up. Judge Stan Strickland will rule on the indigency status within the next five days.

Other evidence revealed today includes conversations that transpired between Casey Anthony and other inmates. Some of the communications include approximately 50 letters written between Casey and another inmate. The letters have since been given to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office for examination. Detectives have interviewed the inmates who were in communication with Casey Anthony as well.

Though Casey Anthony did not make a public confession in any of the statements, she did make statements that were deemed to be ‘relevant.’ To ensure the integrity of the case and interviews with the inmates, the FDLE was brought in and conducted the interviews. The investigation regarding the fifty letters is ongoing, and the State Attorney wants to ensure that no laws or policies of the Orange County Jail were violated during the time Casey was communicating with the other inmate. A number of documents were released in the Casey Anthony case on March 8, 2010. Several motions have been filed and Casey’s attorneys have submitted paperwork indicating that Casey is indigent and cannot pay her own legal fees. Therefore, her defense attorneys are seeking tax payer money to pay for her ‘dream team’ of attorneys. Most people in the state of Florida who are declared indigent are represented by public defenders.

The trial date has been set in the Casey Anthony case and is scheduled for May 9, 2011. It is still unclear where the trial will be held as Casey’s defense team has filed motions requesting a change of venue. According to Casey’s defense team, they have racked up over $100,000 in expenses working Casey’s case.
