There were last minute changes to the Olympics 2010 Opening Ceremony on February 12, 2010 out of respect for Georgian athlete, Nodar Kumaritashvili. During the Opening Ceremony, flags were lowered to half mast as a sign of mourning and sorrow. It was clear throughout the day that the tragic accident had deeply affected those at home, as well as those who unfortunately witnessed the tragedy firsthand.

When the Georgian athletes marched, they could be seen wearing black scarves and a long black ribbon was attached to the national flag. The athletes had tearstained faces and as they marched, the spectators rose to their feet, sharing their sorrow. It wasn’t only the opening ceremony that was changed, but the track itself was changed.

A new report by the Washington Post states that the FIL (International League Federation) had considered cancelling the entire luge event. After an investigation was conducted by Olympic officials it was decided to make adjustments to the track rather than the cancel the entire event. The investigation determined that Nodar Kumaritashvili crashed as a result of human error and not due to faults with the track. Regardless of the findings, changes were made to the track including lowering the speed, a decision that has met with great criticism. The track was shortened, reducing speeds in an effort to prevent tragedies such as the one that befell Nodar Kumaritashvili.

There have been many changes as a result of the Georgian athlete’s fatal accident but none is as overwhelming as the sense of grief and loss. The Olympics are a time where the world comes together to showcase their finest athletes. It is also a time when many put aside their differences and engage in competitive sport. The sudden and tragic loss of Nodar Kumaritashvili changed the Olympic events from a joyous celebration to one filled with sorrow, grief and mourning.
