Abbreviated as DST, daylight saving time is the process of setting clocks forward in an effort to save more daylight throughout the afternoon and less light in the early mornings. This intentionally saves the amount of energy and electricity that is used throughout the nation to power homes. During the beginning of springtime, daylight saving time sets clocks forward. At the end of autumn or fall, clocks are set back one hour.
The first proposal for daylight saving time was in 1895 and many countries utilize the method, however DST is not without its fair share of controversy. Those whose occupations or hobbies require the use of the sun may encounter difficulties due to daylight saving time.
Studies have not yet shown if there is a direct correlation between daylight saving time and crime rate, but many of societal events and activities depend upon lighting for safety, such as driving are enhanced. Studies show that the additional hour of daylight reduces the amount of traffic fatalities.
Many find that the practice of daylight saving time can become troublesome and affects individual sleep patterns. For some, it might take a while to get adjusted to the shift in time and often employees arrive late (or early) to work and other social events during the first week of daylight saving time.
Most computers automatically update themselves to accommodated for DST and for those who aren’t aware of the time shift, their first notice might be the time setting on their televisions, DVDs, Radios, or Computers based upon the technology used to craft the players.
Halloween means trick or treating, candy, and costumes for kids and for adults it means plenty of SyFy Ghost Hunters. Luckily for the diehard ghost-seeker and purveyor of all things paranormal, Hulu broadcasts full episodes. Tonight, however, it isn’t full episodes that the hunters are seeking; it’s the live ghost hunt that SyFy is featuring this Halloween.
The live Halloween Ghost Hunters special features an interactive section on the website where viewers can participate and take part in the hunt. There are different camera views as the hunter search through the Essex County Hospital. You may join in and if you believe you see something eerily creepy, you may click on the panic button. The show is completely interactive with the viewers and the team will address users’ panic button alerts. What could be more fun on Halloween night?
The Essex County Hospital is the perfect place to investigate. Located in the Township of Cedar Grove, New Jersey it was built in 1986 and was a psychiatric hospital. Tragedy struck during the winter months of 1917, when the hospital’s boilers failed to work and the patients were without heat for several weeks. After the ordeal, 24 patients had died, many frozen to death, and 32 patients were diagnosed with frostbite. Many believe that the souls of those who died in the Essex County Hospital haunt the building to this day.
Essex, like many other psychiatric hospitals during that time, was prone to overcrowding. Patients were also subjected to procedures, many experimental. It has been estimated that approximately 10,000 people died while in the hospital center. During the 1960′s to 1990′s the hospital’s population declined and the doors were finally closed in 2007. The SyFy Ghost Hunters team has featured Essex County Hospital before, and has determined that the hospital is haunted. Now, with the interactive cameras, you can decide for yourself.
WCNC of Charlotte, North Carolina reported an interesting story and caught it on tape: a deer swimming in a pool at an apartment complex, the Ashley Arms Historic Apartments. The “Deer Swims in Pool” video has taken the internet by storm and is amazing to watch, almost unbelievable, if it weren’t for the videotape to prove it.
If your first thought was that deer don’t swim, you’re right. How the deer actually entered the pool is another story in itself, and it was caught on videotape. The deer fell from an outside elevated patio and crashed through the roof of the indoor pool facility, located in Gastonia, North Carolina. Once inside, the deer entered the pool and then furiously swam laps looking for a way out. It is estimated that the deer spent 15 minutes swimming in the pool. The incident was caught on security tape and when it was discovered what had happened, the apartment manager and maintenance supervisor arrived on the scene.
Meredith Gaddis, apartment complex manager said that at one point, the deer stayed in the same lane. The maintenance supervisor Carl Moore successfully herded the deer to the shallow end of the pool, where he walked up the steps. Once on solid ground, the deer ran out of the pool area.

Cash for Clunkers survey by Edmunds has White House peeved
A shocking report released by Edmunds Inc. stating the Cash for Clunkers program cost taxpayers 24,000 per vehicle has attracted the not so favorable attention of the White House. Earlier this week, Edmunds.com released their research that stated only 125,000 of the 690,000 total car sales figures should be counted in the national statistics. Their assumption is that the large remainder of new vehicles would have been purchased anyway, regardless of the Cash for Clunkers program.
Edmunds based their figures on the 3 billion dollars of government money spent on the program and divided it by their own estimate of 125,000 vehicles that should have qualified, equaling $24,000 per vehicle.
One day after the results were publicized, the official White House blog site disputed Edmunds figures and discredited their method for determining the controversial number. The blogger went on to state that Edmunds ignored the positive impact that Cash for Clunkers had on the economy by drawing large numbers of customers into dealerships, even if their cars didn’t qualify for the program. The blogger also takes issue with Edmunds for ignoring the possible creation of an estimated 70,000 automotive jobs in the second half of 2009, and attributes Cash for Clunkers for increased production by several major auto makers.
The battle of wits is likely to continue as the White House blogger asserts that Edmunds.com is more interested in grabbing headlines than offering factual information.
Edmunds Inc. publishes four web sites including Edmunds.com which they promote as being the premier online resource for automotive consumer information.
This Halloween kids will be trick or treating and enjoying their costumes, candy and fun. However, it is also a time when danger lurks and parents must take precautions to ensure their kids’ safety and fun. On this Halloween, kids face another challenge: H1N1. In addition to the usual safety tips, parents should take extra care to protect their children from the H1N1 virus. This can be done by both parents and well-meaning neighbors who stay home to hand out candy.
Those who stay home this Halloween can help reduce the spread of the H1N1 virus by using a scoop to dispense candy and treats to children. Typically, many citizens let children reach into a candy bowl to select their goodies. This isn’t an advisable practice this year as more hands mean a greater chance of the virus’ spread. Using a scoop will help solve the problem. Parents are also advised to bring hand sanitizer and to make certain that they and their children use it frequently.
Fire safety is an important aspect of Halloween, especially since many choose to use lit candles in jack-o-lanterns. To ensure a safe Halloween, kids should use glow sticks or flashlights instead of fire. Teach children to be observant and if they see a Jack-o-lantern or other source of flame to keep their distance. Costumes should be flame resistant and safe for children as well. Avoid long, billowy rolls of fabrics that could catch on fire and make sure that costumes aren’t too long as children could trip and fall, causing injury.
On Halloween, kids will do plenty of walking and they will need ample light as well as proper shoes. Choosing tennis shoes or sneakers is preferable to ill fitted shoes that are part of a costume. Flashlights are essential, but glow sticks may be substituted for lighting. Some parents choose to add glow sticks to their kids’ costumes. This is a fun and unobtrusive way to ensure your child can see easily.
To ensure a safe Halloween, kids should be taught not to enter homes when trick or treating. Only approach homes that are well-lit and where residents are clearly at home. Though kids can’t wait to eat their Halloween candy, it’s imperative to wait until the candy has been brought home and inspected before eating. This will also reduce the risk of the H1N1 virus, as children won’t be placing their hands to their mouths.
If choosing masks make sure that the child can see easily and that their vision is not hindered. Face paint is a good choice, but double check the ingredients and use products that have been approved for children’s safety.
By taking these safety tips into consideration, you can rest assured that your kids will have a fun and safe Halloween.
Police announced that they have defined a profile that fits Somer Thompson’s killer. The house at 1080 Gano Avenue has been processed and evidence has been collected and transported for further testing and processing. Sheriff Rick Beseler has now beseeched the help of the community in finding Somer Thompson’s killer.
According to FBI experts, the community should be on the lookout for someone who might be trying to change their appearance, such as cutting their hair, growing out a beard or shaving, even dying their hair color. The killer will most likely have an unusual obsession with Somer Thompson’s case; they may speak about it continually and focus on it throughout the day. Other changes that the public should look for include someone who missed time from work or other scheduled activities on October 19th, 2009 and possibly on the following day as well.
Since Somer Thompson would have more than likely fought for her life, it is possible that her killer has defensive wounds, such as bruising or scratching on their arms, face, or hands. The killer may also appear to be very paranoid, anxious, and nervous as they fear getting caught. It is also possible that Somer Thompson’s killer may be increasing their alcohol or drug consumption, or smoking more cigarettes than normal. An interest or disinterest in religion is possible as well.
One area that the public should be on the lookout for involves the perpetrator’s vehicle. The killer might try to hide or even get rid of their vehicle for no reason. If you suspect someone might be involved in the case you are asked to submit a tip to 1-877-227-6911.
Here is a video taping of Sheriff Rick Beseler speaking about Somer Thompson’s killer’s profile.
